On 30 September 2013, INNANETAPE arrived as a free download: fourteen tracks, just under fifty-three minutes, released through Closed Sessions. Vic Mensa executive produced it alongside Peter Cottontale, Cam O'bi and Om'Mas Keith.
The names on it read like a snapshot of the moment — Chance the Rapper, Ab-Soul, BJ the Chicago Kid, Thundercat, Rockie Fresh, Joey Purp, Eliza Doolittle, Jesse Boykins III, Lili K. and Kenna — over beats from Boi-1da, DJ Dahi, Hit-Boy, Michael Uzowuru and Christian Rich among others. None of it was for sale. You downloaded the folder and you kept it.
Thirteen years to the day, it arrives on streaming for the first time. The rest of this machine is the era around it.
